Deal Guide: Buying & Renting Video Games for PS3, Xbox 360 & Wii

Gaming is expensive.  As a kid I remember wanting all the newest games but couldn’t shell out $60 a month when I only had a $5/week allowance! Renting games at $8/week was a decent option, even though the latest games were always out of stock. Trading in games for new ones was always as option, getting $12 for a game I bought for $60 the month prior, or how about $1.50 for 8 month old sports game. It was an option, a very appalling one.

With most B&M Rental stores (ie. Blockbuster, Hollywood Video, etc.) going out of business and game trader stores (GameStop, EBGames, etc.) never giving you a fair valuation, new options have surfaced attempting to shake-up the gaming market.

1. GameFly - Chances are you’ve heard of GameFly. They’re the leading online video game rental subscription service and have no plans slowing down. With shipping centers  popping up all over the country, you’re guaranteed quick delivery.

Forget the free trial! Here’s how to get 3 months for the price of one!:

2. Select the 2 Games Out plan for $22.95, you automatically get a free month using the above link.

3. In the final week of your 2nd month, click on “Cancel my Membership”, you will be offered a 3rd month completely for free! Here’s proof .  That’s a screenshot of my receipt, nothing was billed.

There you have it, 3 months of gaming for $22.95. You can’t beat that!

2. Goozex - At Goozex you can trade games with other gamers and get the absolute best valuation! Waitlists for newer and “high demand” games are long but if you have no problem waiting or are into playing a variety of games, Goozex is definitely worth checking out. Before you even think about trading in games at a local store, learn more about Goozex. The only thing you’ll have to pay for is “Trade-In Tokens”, which cost about $1.99 each and are used when you receive a game. Also, you get 1 free trade in token just for signing up.

3. Redbox - You just want to try out a game for a day or two? Redbox is now renting video games in select locations for $2/day.

Buying Video Games

1. Buy Pre-Owned - GameStopCraigslisteBay and Amazon. Buying used is always my first option, I’ve never had a problem buying a pre-owned game before. Gamestop occasionally has “Buy 2 Used Games Get 1 Free” specials, so keep an eye out for those.

2. BestBuy – My preferred option of buying new games and accessories and here’s why – Rewards. Alongside of BestBuy’s RewardZone (free), you can also enroll in their Gamers Club where you get a $10 gift certificate for every $150 spent on games and accessories. This is added on top of your RZ points. Bestbuy now also offers pre-owned games and accessories as well.
